Back in 2002, a small corner of Chapel Allerton became the starting point for something truly special. It was there that Ban Kaewkraikhot opened the very first Sukhothai restaurant, naming it after the rural region of Thailand where she spent her childhood. From day one, her vision was clear: to bring authentic Thai cuisine to Leeds, served with warmth, elegance, and an unwavering commitment to quality.
Ban’s ethos remained consistent as her reputation grew — to serve first-class Thai food in sophisticated surroundings, delivered with the kind of service that makes guests feel like family. Over the years, she earned the loyalty of customers who returned time and again, drawn in by her incredible flavours and genuine hospitality.
Her success led to the opening of two more Sukhothai locations, one in Leeds city centre and another in Harrogate. She also expanded her culinary empire with the launch of Zaap Thai, a bold and vibrant street food chain bringing the buzz of Bangkok to the UK.
This month, April 2022, Sukhothai celebrated its 20th anniversary — a major milestone for Ban and her team. To mark the occasion, the restaurant introduced a limited-edition menu, reviving beloved dishes that had once graced their specials board. For 20 days between April 26 and May 15, diners enjoyed favourites like the Gae Kiew Wan Gata Lon — a show-stopping dish of succulent lamb stir-fried in green curry paste, served sizzling hot with sweet basil, lime leaves, green beans, and a kick of fresh chilli.

Ban’s impact on the local food scene didn’t go unnoticed. She became one of Leeds’ most respected restaurateurs, earning a place on the shortlist for Chef of the Year at the Yorkshire Evening Post’s Oliver Awards 2022 — a proud moment that recognised her two decades of culinary excellence.
Reflecting on her journey, Ban said:
“Leeds has been my home for over 20 years now, and I’m so proud of what we’ve achieved at Sukhothai since our humble beginnings back in 2002. Leeds is a fantastic city, full of warm and welcoming people, and one of the most diverse food scenes you’ll find in the world.”
From a humble start in Chapel Allerton to becoming a cornerstone of Thai cuisine in Yorkshire, Sukhothai’s story is one of passion, perseverance, and the power of staying true to your roots — and it’s still being written, one delicious dish at a time.
